The Norwegian Nobel Institute issued a formal statement Friday reinforcing that Nobel Peace Prize awards cannot be transferred, shared, or revoked after being announced, following Venezuelan opposition figure María Corina Machado’s recent suggestion that she would give her prize to President Trump. The clarification came amid confusion over the award’s protocols.
The institute’s statement emphasized the permanence of all Nobel Prize decisions, declaring them final and immutable.
Machado, who received the Peace Prize last October, publicly proposed sharing the honor with Trump this week. Her comments came after United States actions in Venezuela, including the recent apprehension of President Nicolás Maduro and his spouse on narcoterrorism-related charges.
Speaking on a Fox News program Tuesday evening, Machado expressed her desire to personally convey to Trump that Venezuelans wish to share the prize with him. She characterized the award as belonging to the Venezuelan people.
During his own appearance on the same program two days later, Trump responded to the proposal, calling it a potential great honor. The president indicated he anticipated meeting Machado during her planned Washington visit next week.
