President Trump stated Friday that he made no requests of Chinese President Xi Jinping regarding Iran during their bilateral summit this week, even as his administration continues to seek Beijing’s influence over Tehran to reopen a critical global shipping corridor.
Trump told reporters traveling with him on Air Force One that soliciting favors from foreign leaders creates obligations he is unwilling to accept. He framed the position as one of strength rather than diplomatic necessity, asserting that the United States has no need to rely on outside assistance.
The remarks came despite ongoing efforts by senior administration officials to enlist China’s cooperation in resolving the Strait of Hormuz crisis. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and others have urged Beijing to use its considerable leverage as one of Iran’s largest oil customers to press Tehran toward a negotiated settlement and an easing of restrictions on the waterway.
Iran has maintained a near-total blockade of Western-affiliated vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz since early March. The blockade followed the Trump administration’s decision to conduct joint military strikes with Israel against Iranian targets, and it represents one of the most significant disruptions to international shipping in the region in decades.
The strategic importance of the strait is difficult to overstates. The narrow passage between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman serves as a transit point for a substantial share of the world’s seaborne oil supply. The ongoing blockade has sent shockwaves through global energy markets, leaving hundreds of vessels and millions of barrels of petroleum stranded within the Persian Gulf.
China’s role as a primary purchaser of Iranian crude gives Beijing unusual influence over Tehran’s economic calculus, a reality that has driven Washington’s diplomatic outreach. However, Trump’s public comments Friday appeared to complicate that strategy by downplaying any cooperative dynamic between the two powers at a moment when coordination may be essential.
