President Donald Trump indicated Sunday that the United States is evaluating potential military responses to Iran’s suppression of domestic protests, while noting that Tehran has initiated contact regarding nuclear negotiations.
Speaking with reporters during a flight on Air Force One, Trump disclosed that Pentagon officials are examining possible courses of action in response to the Iranian government’s treatment of demonstrators opposing the regime.
“We’re looking at it very seriously. The military is looking at it, and we’re looking at some very strong options. We’ll make a determination,” the president stated.
The comments come as the administration weighs its approach to Iran following Trump’s first-term withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the multilateral nuclear agreement reached during the Obama administration.
Trump confirmed that Iranian officials have initiated discussions about a potential new nuclear agreement. However, he emphasized that military intervention could occur before any diplomatic meetings take place.
The president referenced a previous warning he issued regarding American intervention if Iranian security forces killed protesters. According to Trump, the regime appears to be approaching that threshold.
The administration faces a delicate balancing act between diplomatic engagement and potential military action as it seeks to address both Iran’s nuclear program and its human rights record. The situation recalls previous moments of tension between Washington and Tehran, including the 2020 killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani during Trump’s first presidency.
